Kumankaya Retreat

The Womanhood Retreat is for women who want to embrace their role as a woman on a deeper level. Who want to reconnect with their unique authentic expression of being a woman in our modern world.

This intimate retreat with max. 5 participants encompasses a range of modalities from legal psychedelic plant medicines to sharing circles and sound healing. It will take place in the Netherlands from June 27th - 30th.

The Mission Behind "Kumankaya"

Over the past decade, I’ve again and again struggled to find my way as a woman. In fact, until well into my twenties, I felt more like a girl than a woman. After all, even everyday language refers to grownup women as girls in many cases. You get greeted with "hey girl" and have a "girl’s night" with your friends. If you run a company, chances are you call yourself a „girl boss“.

I can say that I certainly identified with the maiden archetype for a long time. Young, focused on looks, available, free, experimenting…

Especially transitioning into motherhood made me ask the question: Why don’t I want to be a real woman? A grownup? Grounded? Owning my power and my wisdom in a more mature way?

But in a society that fetishizes female youthfulness, it’s hard to own your womanhood.

In a society where a female chancellor gets judged by her clothing rather than her achievements, it’s hard not to fall into the trap of constant worry about one’s appearance.

In a society that’s so judgmental, how can we confidently and authentically express ourselves?

I believe what our society really needs at this point is that women step up and own their womanhood. That grown up women no longer pretend to be girls. That we say enough is enough when our boundaries are crossed and values neglected.

This retreat will be a safe space for us to jointly explore the following themes:

Navigating women’s issues: How do we relate more confidently to to our own bodies, our periods, pregnancy, birth, abortion, sexuality, contraception, menopause? How to release the shame that these issues carry for many of us?

Power: In which areas of life are we pretending to be smaller than we actually are? Not owning our knowledge and capabilities?

Career: How to be a female leader in organizations and companies that were built mostly by men for men? How to meet requirements of the existing system without compromising our values and needs?

Voice: Where do we not speak our truth and why?

Motherhood: How to be an amazing, intuitive mother in a modern world with many clashing demands.

We will explore these themes through a variety of ways. We will use words in sharing circles and discussions, we will use our imagination in guided meditations. Breathwork, active meditation and dance will allow us to tap into the intelligence of the body. Psilocybin mushrooms will guide us to other realms and bring forgotten wisdom to the surface.

Kumankaya Healing Centre

Kumankaya is so much more than a retreat centre for me and my family. It is the place where I finally healed my bulimia after 14 years of suffering from it. It is the place where Jordan asked me to marry him.

My first impression of Kumankaya was that it resembles a secret Zen garden in the middle of the Yucatan jungle. After a half hour drive from the closest village you enter what feels like a parallel universe where time seems to be slower than elsewhere. Remi and Ashley, the centre owners and shamans, are among the sweetest people I have ever met. There is no pretence, only genuine human connection and authentic care for the wellbeing of their guests.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in charming jungle huts that are spread out over the campus. Some of the huts have no electricity and I personally enjoyed the calming effect of relying on candles once the sun has set.

All over the campus you find hammocks to rest in and listen to the jungle sounds. The footpaths around the center invite you to go on strolls around the woods.

Standard accomodation is in shared twin rooms. For an additional fee, it is possible to book a single room.

Learn More About Kumankaya

“I am a strong and powerful woman. I am proud to be a woman and I celebrate the qualities that I have as a woman. I am not defined by other people’s opinion of who I should be or what I should do as a woman. I determine that, not anyone else.

I am not passed up for a position, title, or promotion because I am a woman. I fully deserve all the good things that come my way. Irrespective of what anyone might think, being a woman places no boundaries or limits on my abilities. I can do anything I set my mind to.

I celebrate my womanhood and I am beautiful both inside and out.”

Testimonials from Colleagues, Students & Clients

"Tanja’s understanding of Corporate Social Responsibility, coupled with her deep expertise in social psychology, enable her to support students in an unparalleled way, which, rather than cascading knowledge from outside-in, is focused on unlocking their thinking process from within, enabling a teaching approach based on co-creation, curiosity and shared reflections. I will never forget the long brainstorming sessions out-of-class with her, randomly discussing about the future of the world and the role of organizations in it."
